Effect of Reflective Film Mulching on Light Environment , and Carnation Productivity and Quality

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of reflective film mulching on the light environment, and the effect on the improvement of growth, productivity and quality of cut carnation flowers under protected cultivation. Reflective films tested for the experiment were Neopolyshine, Taiyo and Tyvek. The reflectances of the reflective films were over 85 percent in the range of photosynthetic ally active radiation. At 10 §¯ height from soil surface, the reflected radiant flux density of the mulching plot was 340.6 Wm^(-2), while that of the non-mulching plot was 13.8 Wm^(-2) in glasshouse, showing 92 percent of transmittance of outside radiant flux density. Therefore, the reflectance of the mulching plot was 73 percent of incident radiation. The light environment in carnation community was improved by reflective film mulching. Especially, increased irradiation rate near soil surface was effective for growth and photosynthesis rate. Reflective film mulching was effective on the promotion of flower bud development, control of flowering peak, increase in number of cut flowers and decrease in calyx splitting in carnation.
